Community Service

The true leader serves. Serves people. Serves their best interests, and in so doing will not always be popular, may not always impress. But because true leaders are motivated by loving concern rather than a desire for personal glory, they are willing to pay the price.

The Other Side of Leadership

Service strengthens young peoples' sense of civic engagement, and develops a connection to the community. Take a look at the current and past projects that Foley campers and staff have participated in.

Global Communities - Open Arms

This year, Camp Foley is going global to begin involvement with Open Arms Home for Children in South Africa.  One of our alumni families, the Horans have been involved with the orphanage for a few years.

Camp Foley is an “Angel”.  From their website www.openarmshome.com, here is what is said about being an “Angel”:Open Arms “Angels” are critical to the successful provision of love and care to every child at Open Arms Home for Children.

  • Physical needs such as food, clothing and doctor’s visits
  • Recreational opportunities including participation in sports, art and crafts and bicycles for the children
  • Most importantly, love provided by our permanent house parents and staff
  • Educational needs including uniforms, supplies and textbooks

About our Kid

Asekho, a lively 5 year old boy who has been with the organization for a little over two years. Asekho was born on July 25.2005 and is a very affectionate and kind child. In the picture below he is the child in the left-hand corner of the photo. As we get more information we will relay it on to you.

We are hoping in our partnership to be able to send the children gifts or notes made by our Foley campers.  Perhaps in the future, we can have a Foley group volunteer in South Africa!

Local Communities

Camp Foley has always been involved in giving to our local community and our environment. Service strengthens young peoples' sense of civic engagement, and develops a connection to the community. Service has been a strong part of our mission. As an organization we have supported the following causes.

  • Food Shelf – all edibles collected on arrival day and in packages
  • Clothes Closet and Thrift Store – all of the year’s lost and found
  • Roadside Clean Up – three miles along Highway 134
  • Donation to Whitefish Area Properties Association for the testing and care of the waters of the Whitefish Lake Chain
  • Donation to Minnesota Waters to support the care of lakes in Minnesota
  • Camp Foley also matches all of the scholarship money to provide a camping experience for young people from the Midwest.

Grandpa's Run for the Walleye & Crosslake 5K Run

ANYONE CAN RUN! Foley campers have participate in Grandpa's Run for the Walleye.  This 5k run benefits walleye research and conservation of Walleye in Minnesota.  Last summer we had 14 kids run in the race.  The campers participated in the Running Clinic at Foley for training and then ran the race in Crosslake, MN (below).

Campers run in a 5K race to benefit the local area DNR and Waterways (right).

We have also ran a 5k run in Crosby, MN to help raise money for the Crosby HS Cross Country Team.  Due to budget cuts, the program was going to be eliminated so the benefit helped to make sure that the Crosby team could compete this past fall.  The event was a success and their season was saved (below right)!

Leadership Service Projects

Each summer the Foley LITs and CITs are given the opportunity to leave camp for a community service project. Take a look at the projects we have done in the past!

Visiting the Nursing Home

TO BE YOUNG AGAIN! This past summer, over 40 Leadership Campers were able to visit the local nursing home.   Campers visited with residents, played dominoes, “bowling”, and did puzzles.  It was different each time due to what the residents were interested in.  The LITs were able to get a little taste of what life is like for some of the elderly people in our community and likewise the residents loved having the energy of youth in their lives for a couple hours.

Learn-n-Play Daycare

CONNECTING GENERATIONS! We partnered with a local daycare to do programming for three year olds.  The older CITs and LITs created an hour and half program around a theme such as space (aliens), ice cream, sports, beach, ocean, and zoo.  It was a great opportunity of our campers to realize how important it is to be flexible, age appropriate, and to just have fun!

Camp Knutson

CAMP IS FOR EVERYONE! We visited Camp Knutson, a special needs camp about 15 minutes away from Foley. We worked with populations of kids and young adults with Down Syndrome, Autism, and Heart Disease. Each of our visits were a little different, but we were given a tour of the facilities and worked with Knutson staff to assist with the evening program. These visits allowed the LITs and CITs to realize that the camp environment is for everyone.

Habitat for Humanity

WE CAN HELP! 10 of our 4th session CITs and LIT 2s traveled to Brainerd, MN to work with Habitat for Humanity. We received an overview of the habitat organization in the Brainerd Lakes Area, and the need for affordable housing. We spent most of the day staining molding to go into a house the following week. We also were able to visit a house that a home owner was in the process of moving into.
