4. Practice Independence appropriately for your age pack yourself when going on a vacation or overnight, make your own bed, fold your own clothes, eat a variety of foods, etc. How about signing up for an activity or event independently of your friends just because you want to?

5. Practice Making New Friends using this secret method If you can get people to start talking about themselves and just sit there and nod, youve made a friend. The big secret is that people love to talk about themselves. Practice sitting and nodding and letting someone else do all of the talking!

6. Never spent a night away from family or your home? Have mom or dad arrange this for you. Avoid calling family members while you are gone as you can't call at camp. Have your guest family call if a call needs to be made.  This would be like camp, when the directors call if necessary.

7. Not a strong swimmer? Sign up for some swimming lessons or practice in the pool. It helps if you can tread water for 5 minutes and swim with confidence 50 yards without stopping.

8. Find out where camp is located Get out a map and locate Minnesota. We are due west of Duluth in the center of the state on Whitefish Lake. This would impress family and friends if you could tell them where you are going to camp.

9. Print out the camp address and give them to your friends and family to write you while you are at camp.  Dont forget to give them the dates of when you will be at camp.

10. Help your mom and/or dad adjust to having you gone Does this sound funny to you? Parents need to be trained! Remind them to write to you snail mail is more popular than emails and no packages. Leave some notes around the house reminding them that you love and miss them.  Leave a schedule for them to feed your pets, where to leave phone messages from your friends, and to not clean out your room while you are gone.

11. Pack yourself for camp or at least help Remember to bring some small tokens to personalize your space favorite stuffed animal, snapshots of family or friends or a small poster for the wall by your bed. Dont over pack as you have to wheel or carry your luggage and take care of all of the things you bring.

12. Relax and when the big day arrives - Put on a smile and remember that everyone is anxious even returning campers! Wear an outfit that you like to feel confident and comfortable. Smile some more! Be yourself, but be extra friendly.  Remember your counselors will help you find your bed, meet potential friends, and guide you in your summer adventure.
