Camp Foley

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the dates, salary, and minimum age requirements?

Please visit our Employment Facts section.

What kind of experience or skills do I need to apply?

"At Foley, I learned to work with a team, both directly and indirectly. Sometimes we were all working closely together planning a project, but other times we were all working in our own way toward the same goal. Both types of interaction are important in the job market. I learned that putting my heart into my job required flexibility and patience, but was more rewarding than I could have imagined." -Jill, Resident Hall Coordinator, U of MO -Columbia, Past Staff

We have many different positions at camp and some require more experience than others.  All counselors are cabin counselors in addition to instructing activities or serving as a support staff member in camp (see Job Positions pdf).  We like to hire people that have experience working with kids, and have been involved in their schools and communities

Can I work for just part of the summer?

With the exception of nurses, we hire our staff for the whole season. We need our whole staff in camp all summer to meet the needs of our campers and camp programs.  See our Employment Facts page for employment dates.

Do I need any special certifications to work at camp?

Some or our staff positions require specific certifications, all of our waterfront staff and trip staff must have lifeguard certification. Please check the Job Positions (pdf) page for more information on specific positions.

How often would I have access to my cell phone and email?

A camp job does not place you by the phone or computer.  Counselors can place calls during their daily free time and after 10:00 p.m.  There is one telephone line exclusively for our counselors, and most cell phones will work at camp.  Counselors may also receive and send e-mail during this time.

Is there a dress code at camp?

Camp is a place where one can live a simple lifestyle without all of the pressures facing us in our world today.  We invite our staff and campers to live and enjoy this simple and wholesome lifestyle.  All camp staff serve as role models for our campers.  All clothing should portray the "professionalism" of a camp counselor.  This includes wearing appropriate clothing (not advertising alcohol, drugs, foul language, etc.) and clothing that appropriately covers oneself (no bikinis or skimpy items), and no visible body art or piercing other than ears.

How does time off work?  Can I take a couple of days off for a wedding?

"Working with kids is more difficult than working with adults. Kids are somewhat more unpredictable and show their emotions much more. Working with kids enhances your ability to tap into your ability to be compassionate and encouraging, while at the same time, increasing tolerance and patience, which are all career, as well as, parent enhancing traits." ~Pat, Human Resources, Norwest Banks, Past Staff

Camp is a demanding job and catching your breath is extremely important.  Every week, counselorshave a 20-hour break with a large group of other counselors.  In addition, counselors receive one evening off per week.  To get the most out of the Foley experience, staff should plan on spending time off with other Foley counselors in the vicinity of camp. Time off requests must be made in advance, and we honor such requests when possible; sometimes it is not possible, due to certain special programs at camp that require the staff to be present. We are unable to honor any requests longer than 2 days.
